Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod (first two images above) is a classic coastal destination with miles of pristine beaches that welcome return visitors year after year. Each has its own character — from calm, sheltered bays to more dramatic stretches of sand facing the Atlantic Ocean. The Cape Cod National Seashore is a prime example of the area’s natural beauty, with protected wilderness areas that are perfect for hiking, wildlife watching and beachcombing.

Families will find a range of nature-based discovery activities, from exploring the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to learning about local ecosystems at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Cycle along scenic paths or take a boat tour to view seals and migratory birds. Cape Cod’s slower pace and focus on nature make it a perfect spot to experience the raw beauty of New England’s coastline.

Algarve, Portugal

Although it’s a well-known and popular beach destination for Europeans, the Algarve (last three images above) still holds a few secrets. Many of the region’s hidden beaches are remote and only accessible by boat or foot, providing a sense of wilderness that is hard to find elsewhere. The waters are clear and often calm, ideal for swimming or exploring the caves and grottoes that dot the coastline.

With its dry, Mediterranean climate, the Algarve is also home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature lovers. Explore Ria Formosa Natural Park, where you can spot spoonbills, herons and turtles on the five-mile trail, or visit between October and March for a chance to see pink flamingos. For an up-close experience, you can take a guided birdwatching boat trip or rent a kayak to explore the marshes and backwaters.
